If an immigration office, employer, university, or citizenship authority asks for an Indonesian police clearance, the document you are usually looking for is an SKCK (Surat Keterangan Catatan Kepolisian).

The process changed in 2026. Instead of starting with a pile of papers at a police station, applicants now begin through Polri’s digital SKCK service. If you are a foreign national, the current WNA registration asks for your passport number and a KITAS or KITAP option. The government fee is Rp30,000, the certificate is valid for six months, and WNA applicants use a yellow-background photo.

So before you apply, get the sequence right. First confirm that the WNA route fits your status. Then prepare the details the system asks for, choose the correct purpose and destination country, review the preview carefully, and only then submit and pay.

What Is an SKCK?

SKCK stands for Surat Keterangan Catatan Kepolisian. Polri issues it to state whether police-record information exists for the applicant.

That wording matters. An SKCK is not simply a generic letter saying, “this person has no criminal record.” It reports what Polri’s record checks show. If you are using the certificate for immigration, employment, licensing, or citizenship, treat it as the Indonesian police-record document requested for that specific purpose.

SKCK Quick Facts for Foreigners

  • Official name: Surat Keterangan Catatan Kepolisian (SKCK)
  • Issued by: Indonesian National Police (Polri)
  • Current legal basis: Perpol No. 1 of 2026, effective 20 May 2026
  • Application route: Polri’s digital SKCK service / Polri Super App
  • Official fee: Rp30,000 per application
  • Validity: 6 months
  • WNA photo: yellow background
  • Language: Indonesian and English
  • Scope: one SKCK is issued for one purpose and one destination country

Who Can Apply for an SKCK?

Both Indonesian citizens (WNI) and foreign nationals (WNA) can apply under Perpol No. 1 of 2026. For foreigners, however, the current online route is built around Indonesian residence-permit holders.

When you enter the WNA registration flow, Polri asks for your passport number and requires you to choose KITAS o KITAP. That is your first checkpoint: make sure your immigration status actually fits the route before you prepare the rest of the application.

If you only stayed in Indonesia on a tourist visa, Visto all'arrivo, or another short-stay status, do not assume the same WNA route applies. Confirm your eligibility with Polri first. That small check can save you from collecting documents or paying an agent for a process you may not be able to use.

Health-insurance status can also matter. Unless an exemption applies, applicants must be active Jaminan Kesehatan participants. WNA domiciled in Indonesia who do not work, or who work for less than six months, are exempt. Where the requirement applies, Polri can obtain active-participant status through data interoperability with BPJS Kesehatan.

What Is an SKCK Used For?

Before you click through the application, decide why you need the certificate. The purpose you choose is not a throwaway field; it determines what the SKCK is issued for.

The regulation lists purposes including:

  • Occupazione
  • Istruzione
  • Visa applications
  • Permanent or temporary residence permits
  • Citizenship changes
  • Naturalization
  • Public-office or professional requirements

For many foreign applicants, the receiving authority is outside Indonesia: an immigration department, employer, licensing body, university, or citizenship authority.

Now the important part: Perpol No. 1 of 2026 says one SKCK is issued for one purpose and one destination country. If two authorities need police certificates for different purposes or different countries, do not assume one SKCK will cover both. Choose deliberately before you submit.

What Information Does Polri Actually Check?

You are not just uploading a passport and waiting for a PDF. Polri checks the information in your application against police-record data available to it.

Perpol No. 1 of 2026 defines police-record data as information managed by Polri that can come from Polri and/or relevant ministries and agencies. The regulation also provides for data interoperability with ministries, agencies, and local governments.

That does not mean an SKCK is a universal search of every database in Indonesia. Keep the claim narrow: the certificate reports police-record information based on the data Polri checks under the SKCK framework.

And if you have a past police record, you can still submit an application. The SKCK is designed to state whether a police record exists; it is not a certificate reserved only for people with no record.

What Documents Do Foreigners Need for an SKCK?

Before you open the application, put the details you will need in front of you. It is much easier to finish the form when you are not stopping halfway to search for a permit number or a suitable photo.

Be ready with:

  • Un passaporto valido
  • KITAS or KITAP details
  • An active email address
  • An active phone number
  • A recent color passport photo with a yellow background
  • The purpose of the SKCK
  • The destination country, where relevant
  • Your selected issuing or collection location
  • Any additional supporting documents requested in the application

There is one extra detail for the manual fallback route: when a manual application is used for an overseas purpose, Perpol No. 1 of 2026 specifies a passport with at least six months of remaining validity.

You may see older SKCK guides asking every foreigner for sponsor letters, IMTA, STM, fingerprints, and a large paper file. Do not copy that checklist automatically. The 2026 system is designed to show the information and supporting documents required for the application you are actually making.

If the app asks you for additional evidence, follow the current prompt. That should take priority over a third-party checklist written under an older procedure.

How to Apply for an SKCK Online in 2026

The normal 2026 route starts online. Your job is to move through the application in the right order and catch mistakes before they become part of the issued certificate.

Step 1: Access the Official Polri SKCK Service

Start with the official SKCK Online portal o il Polri Super App. Create or access your account, then choose WNA if you are a foreign national.

The WNA registration currently asks for your passport number, KITAS or KITAP status, email address, and phone number. Use your current details, not numbers copied from an expired permit or an old application.

Step 2: Complete Your Application

Open the SKCK feature and enter the requested personal, domicile, purpose, photo, location, and issuance details.

Match the spelling and numbers on your passport and residence permit exactly. A small mismatch can turn a straightforward application into a verification problem.

Step 3: Choose the Correct Purpose and Destination

This is the point to slow down.

Choose the reason you need the SKCK and, where applicable, the destination country. Because the regulation ties one SKCK to one purpose and one destination country, a wrong selection can make an otherwise valid certificate unsuitable for the authority that asked for it.

Step 4: Review the SKCK Preview

The digital process gives you a preview before you confirm the data. Use it.

Read your name, passport number, purpose, destination country, and other details line by line. This is your easiest chance to catch an error. Fixing a typo here is far simpler than dealing with an issued certificate that carries the wrong information.

Step 5: Make the Official Payment

Once the information is correct, pay through the method shown in the Polri service. The official PNBP fee is Rp30,000 per application for both WNI and WNA.

If you use an agency, translator, courier, or legal office, separate its service fee from the government fee in your mind. Rp30,000 is the official SKCK charge; anything else is a third-party cost.

Step 6: Wait for Verification and Follow the Issuance Instructions

Polri verifies the application and the relevant police-record information. After payment and verification, follow the instructions generated in your application for printing, issuance, or collection.

The regulation allows access through the digital service and collection at a police office. If another person collects the physical SKCK for you, the rules provide for collection by an authorized representative using a procura.

Can You Apply for an SKCK Offline?

Usually, no. The 2026 process is electronic.

Perpol No. 1 of 2026 allows manual issuance when Polri’s digital application is not functioning and the outage has been officially declared by the authorized Polri unit.

So do not start by walking into a police station simply because an older article tells you to. Unless Polri has announced a system problem, begin with the current digital route.

2026 SKCK Process vs Older Online Guides

Search results can be confusing because many older guides describe the previous workflow. If two instructions conflict, use the current Polri application and Perpol No. 1 of 2026 as your reference point.

The practical differences are:

  • Where to start: older guides often begin with Polres, Polda, or another police office. The 2026 route begins through Polri’s digital SKCK service.
  • Payment: follow the payment method shown in the current application rather than assuming you must pay cash at a police station.
  • Collection: the current rules allow the SKCK print feature or collection at a police office. A representative can collect it with a power of attorney.
  • Renewal: Perpol No. 1 of 2026 does not repeat the previous extension procedure. If the certificate expires, plan for a new application unless the current Polri service tells you otherwise.

How Much Does an SKCK Cost?

The government fee is Rp30,000 per application for both Indonesian and foreign applicants.

That number is useful because it lets you separate the official charge from convenience fees. If an agent, translator, courier, or legal office quotes more, the difference is a service fee, not a higher government SKCK fee.

The same Rp30,000 government fee applies if you need the Indonesian SKCK for an Australian, Canadian, or other foreign immigration process. Any background-check fee charged by the destination country is separate.

How Long Does It Take to Get an SKCK?

Do not build your deadline around a promise such as “one to three business days.” Perpol No. 1 of 2026 does not set one nationwide processing-time guarantee for every case.

Your timing can change if Polri needs to verify a mismatch, confirm payment, request additional information, or handle a high workload at the issuing unit.

You can still control part of the timeline. Prepare your passport, permit details, photo, contact information, purpose, and destination before you start. Then use the preview stage to fix anything that does not match.

How Long Is an SKCK Valid?

An SKCK is valid for six months from the date of issue.

If yours expires while you still need a police certificate, do not automatically follow an old “renewal” tutorial. The previous regulation contained a specific extension mechanism, but Perpol No. 1 of 2026 does not set out that old procedure. Plan for a new application unless Polri’s current service gives you a different instruction.

Do Foreigners Need Fingerprints for an SKCK?

Do not make a special fingerprint trip just because an older guide tells you to.

Perpol No. 1 of 2026 does not list fingerprints among the minimum information for the electronic application or the minimum documents for the manual fallback procedure. Some older Polri pages and local service instructions still mention fingerprints, so follow the current application or issuing unit if it specifically asks you for them.

The rule of thumb is simple: provide fingerprints when the current process asks for them, not because a pre-2026 checklist assumes every foreign applicant needs them.

Can You Get an Indonesian SKCK From Outside Indonesia?

Already outside Indonesia? This is the part where you should slow down before sending original documents or paying someone to act for you.

Perpol No. 1 of 2026 establishes electronic SKCK issuance, but it does not create a separate step-by-step overseas procedure for former foreign residents. At the same time, the current WNA registration asks for a passport number and requires the applicant to select KITAS or KITAP.

If your KITAS or KITAP has expired, use this order:

  • Ask the authority requesting the police certificate exactly what Indonesian document it requires and whether it will accept an electronically issued or printed SKCK.
  • Contact the official SKCK helpdesk and explain that you are a former resident applying from abroad. Ask whether the current digital route accepts your status and what evidence it requires.
  • If Polri confirms that you can apply, follow the issuance and collection instructions generated by the current system.
  • Only arrange overseas fingerprints, courier original documents, or pay an agent if Polri or the receiving authority confirms that those steps apply to your case.

The official SKCK Online portal lists [email protected] for service questions and also publishes a WhatsApp contact for technical help.

If Polri instructs you to collect a physical SKCK through someone in Indonesia, the regulation allows office collection by an authorized representative with a power of attorney.

The key point: do not assume a pre-2026 overseas workflow involving fingerprints, an embassy, or a representative still applies to every former resident.

Do You Need to Apostille or Legalize an SKCK?

Not automatically. Getting the SKCK and authenticating it for use overseas are two different jobs.

Start with the receiving authority. Ask whether it accepts the SKCK as issued or requires an apostille, legalization, or another form of authentication. Do this before you pay for an extra service.

If the document will be used in a country covered by the Apostille Convention and the document is eligible for Apostille, Indonesia’s Ministry of Law directs applicants to the official Apostille service. For documents that use the non-Apostille legalization route, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that applicants first obtain the relevant legalization from the Ministry of Law before continuing through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ service.

You can also use Polri’s SKCK verification service to check the certificate’s status and authenticity in the Polri system. That check is not the same as an apostille or consular legalization for overseas use.

Can Tourists or Visa on Arrival Holders Get an SKCK?

The current WNA registration does not show a tourist visa or Visa on Arrival option. It asks foreign applicants to identify themselves with a passport and select KITAS or KITAP.

So if you only visited Indonesia on a short-stay visa, do not assume you can submit through the standard WNA flow. Ask Polri whether an SKCK can be issued for your history and ask the receiving authority whether it will accept another form of evidence if an SKCK is not available for your status.

Where Should You Apply?

You no longer need to guess whether to begin at a Polsek, Polres, Polda, or another office.

The digital application asks you to select an issuing location from the service options available for your application. Follow the location offered by the official system rather than choosing an office based only on an old guide.

If you need the SKCK for an international purpose, check the purpose and destination country before you finish. Those fields matter more than simply choosing the nearest police office.

What If Your SKCK Application Has an Error or Is Returned?

Something looks wrong? Fix it as early as you can.

The digital process gives you a preview before confirmation. Under the manual fallback procedure, if the data or supporting documents do not match, the officer can return the application so you can correct it.

Start with the details most likely to cause trouble:

  • Name and passport number: match your current passport exactly.
  • KITAS/KITAP details: use the information shown on your current residence permit.
  • Purpose and destination country: match the reason the receiving authority asked for the SKCK.
  • Supporting documents: follow the prompts in the current application instead of an old checklist.
  • Health-insurance status: where Jaminan Kesehatan is required, make sure your active status can be verified.
  • Payment: use the payment channel generated or shown by the official service.

If you still cannot move forward, use the SKCK help feature or the contact details published on the official SKCK Online portal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Indonesia Police Clearance

What is the fastest way to get a police clearance certificate in Indonesia?

Use the official digital route, prepare your information before you start, and fix mismatches at the preview stage. There is no universal guaranteed processing time for every application, so the fastest approach is to remove delays you can control.

Is an SKCK the same as a police clearance certificate?

In this context, yes. SKCK is Indonesia’s police-record certificate. A foreign authority may call the requested document a police certificate, police clearance certificate, criminal record certificate, or certificate of good conduct.

Do I need an SKCK for immigration to Australia, Canada, or another country?

That depends on the authority handling your case. If it asks for an Indonesian police certificate, SKCK is the Indonesian document to check. Because one SKCK is tied to one purpose and one destination country, enter those details carefully when you apply.

Use official sources when you are ready to apply. They should override an older blog post or checklist if the instructions conflict.
