Переезд на Бали из Австралии: визы, расходы, налоги и чек-лист для переезда
Bali may feel close to Australia, but moving there is very different from taking a long holiday. You need a visa that matches what you plan to do. You also need a realistic budget, private health cover, a housing plan, and clear advice about tax, Medicare, and superannuation.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the move in the same order you are likely to face it. So, you can decide whether the move fits your life and how to make it with fewer costly surprises.
Quick Answer: Can Australians Move to Bali?
Yes. Australians can live in Bali, but Australian citizenship does not give you an automatic right to stay, work, or run a business in Indonesia. Your legal position depends on your visa, stay permit, work activity, sponsor, and length of stay.
It helps to separate three ideas. A visa lets you travel to Indonesia for an approved purpose. A stay permit lets you remain for a set period. An ITAS is a limited stay permit. Many Australian expats still call it a KITAS. Work permission is a separate issue and depends on your role, employer, clients, and income.

A long visit is not the same as residency
You can test life in Bali with a visit visa before making a full move. That can be a smart first step. It gives you time to compare areas, check schools, view homes, and learn how daily life feels outside a holiday setting.
However, a tourist or visit visa is not a general work permit. It may allow tourism, family visits, meetings, or other listed activities, but it does not give you open permission to take a job, sell services, or earn local pay. Always match the visa to the activity, not only to the number of days you want to stay.
Four questions will narrow down your visa
- How long do you plan to stay in Indonesia?
- Will your income come from Australia, Indonesia, or both?
- Will you work, invest, retire, study, or join family?
- Do you have an Indonesian employer, company, spouse, or other sponsor?
Your answer may point to a visit visa, a remote worker visa, a work ITAS, an investor ITAS, a family ITAS, or a retirement route. The best choice can change when your activities change, so review the plan before you sign a lease or accept work.
Which Bali Visa Is Best for Australians?
There is no single “Bali visa” for every Australian. Bali follows Indonesian immigration law, and each visa has a stated purpose. The options below are common starting points, not personal legal advice.
| Visa | Лучшее для | Остаться | Entry | Спонсор | Work position | Main warning |
| B1 | Short trial | 30 days + one extension | Одиночный | Нет | No local paid work | 60-day maximum |
| C1 | Longer trial | 60 days, extendable to 180 | Одиночный | Usually no | No open work rights | Bank proof and extensions |
| E33G | Overseas employee | 1 год | Multiple | Нет | Foreign-company assignment | USD 60,000 income proof |
| Work ITAS (E23/E25) | Indonesian employment | Depends on category | Multiple | Работодатель | Work only as approved | Sponsor and job must match |
| Investor ITAS (E28) | Qualifying PT PMA investor | Depends on category | Multiple | Usually company | Approved investor role | Real company and investment needed |
| Family ITAS (E31) | Joining spouse or parent | Depends on category | Multiple | Family sponsor | Work rights not automatic | Relationship evidence |
| E33E | Age 55+ second home | 5 лет | Multiple | Нет | No open local job | Large financial conditions |
| E33F | Older person second home | 1 год | Multiple | Да | No open local job | Sponsor and income rules |
B1 Visa on Arrival for a short trial
B1 Виза по прибытии is useful for a short trial. It gives you 30 days and can be extended once, for a total stay of up to 60 days. The current government fee is IDR 500,000. You normally do not need a sponsor. Your passport must usually have at least six months left. An e-VoA can be extended online. The B1 may also be moved to another stay permit through the bridging-visa process.
Use B1 to view homes, visit schools, and test daily life. You cannot use it to sell goods or services, take an Indonesian job, or receive pay from an Indonesian person or company. If you already know you need more time, compare the C1 before you travel.
C1 visit visa for a longer test period
The Туристическая виза C1 is a single-entry visit visa. It starts with 60 days and can be extended to a total stay of up to 180 days. The current government fee is IDR 1,000,000. Most Australian applicants do not need a sponsor. Current requirements include a passport valid for at least six months and three months of bank statements showing at least USD 2,000.
The C1 can be useful for a longer test stay. It does not give you open work rights or permission to earn local income. Check the current conversion rules if you may later move to an ITAS or KITAS.
E33G remote worker visa
The E33G remote worker visa is for eligible people who carry out assignments for a company established outside Indonesia. It allows a one-year stay and multiple entries while the re-entry permit is valid. The current government fee is IDR 7,000,000, and no sponsor is required.
Current requirements include a passport valid for at least six months, three months of bank statements showing at least USD 2,000, proof of yearly salary or income of at least USD 60,000, and an employment agreement with a company outside Indonesia. It is not a general digital nomad visa for selling services to Indonesian clients. Immigration permission and tax residency remain separate.
Work ITAS for an Indonesian job
If an Indonesian company hires you, the employer will usually need to sponsor the correct work and stay permissions. A tourist visa, visit visa, or remote worker visa does not replace this process.
Ask the employer to explain the job title, sponsor entity, work authorization, location, and length of stay before you start. Do not rely on a verbal promise that the paperwork will be fixed later.
Investor ITAS for a real business role
An investor ITAS may fit a foreigner with a qualifying role and investment in a PT PMA, which is an Indonesian foreign-owned company. Current investor classifications include E28 and more specific E28 categories. The exact route depends on the company, investment, and your role. Renting a villa, buying a leasehold property, or transferring money to Indonesia does not by itself qualify you.
Company ownership, paid-up capital, business classification, reporting, tax, and the person’s actual duties all matter. Set up the company for a real business reason, not only to obtain a stay permit.
Family and spouse ITAS
If you are married to an Indonesian citizen, or joining a spouse or parent who holds an Indonesian stay permit, a family route may be available. The exact index depends on the family relationship and the sponsor’s status.
Family residence rights do not always include unrestricted work rights. Check what paid activities are allowed before accepting a job or running a business.
Retirement and second-home routes
Older Australians may qualify for a current second-home route. The E33E silver hair ITAS is a five-year option for people aged 55 or older and does not require a sponsor. The E33F retirement ITAS is a one-year option and does require a sponsor. Each has financial conditions. Online terms such as retirement KITAS and Silver Hair visa may refer to older or informal labels, so confirm the exact current index before applying.
A simple visa decision guide
- You want to test Bali for one or two months: start by checking the B1 Visa on Arrival.
- You want a longer visit without local work: review the C1 visit visa.
- You work for a company outside Indonesia: review the E33G remote worker visa.
- An Indonesian company will employ you: ask about the correct work ITAS.
- You will own and actively manage a qualifying PT PMA: review the investor route.
- You are joining an Indonesian spouse or a permit-holding family member: review the family ITAS categories.
- You plan to retire: compare the current retirement and second-home options.
Before you apply, write down every activity you expect to do. Include paid work, unpaid work, content creation, public speaking, consulting, property activity, and business management. A visa can be valid while your actual activity still breaks its conditions.
Not sure which visa matches your move?
The correct route depends on how long you will stay, where your income comes from, whether you will work, and whether you are moving with family.
Visa Indonesia can help you review the available options and prepare the application when you are ready.
How Much Does It Cost to Move From Australia to Bali?
Bali can cost less than Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth, but the cost of living in Bali depends on your area and habits. Rent in Canggu, Berawa, Seminyak, and parts of Uluwatu can take a large share of your budget. Imported food, private schools, insurance, and regular flights home can also add a lot.
Use these amounts as planning examples, not price quotes. They are a sample relocation budget built from housing, food, utilities, transport, visas, insurance, flights home, and school costs. Check live prices in the area you plan to use. Exchange rates and fees can change.
Rough monthly planning ranges in Australian dollars
| Household | Жилищное строительство | Daily living | Transport & services | Total planning range |
| Single person | AUD 900-1,500 | AUD 650-1,000 | AUD 450-700 | AUD 2,000-3,200 |
| Пара | AUD 1,500-2,600 | AUD 1,300-2,000 | AUD 1,000-1,400 | AUD 3,800-6,000 |
| Family of four, no school | AUD 2,000-3,500 | AUD 2,100-3,000 | AUD 1,200-1,800 | AUD 5,300-8,300 |
| Family of four, with school | Housing above | Daily living above | School fees vary | AUD 6,500-10,500+ |
A careful solo resident can spend less by living inland, renting a room or simple apartment, eating local food, and limiting nightlife. A person who wants a private pool villa, western groceries, premium gyms, regular drivers, and frequent restaurant meals can spend far more.
One-time relocation costs
- Visa applications and document preparation
- Flights and extra luggage
- Temporary accommodation while you search
- Rental deposit and advance rent
- Shipping or storage in Australia
- Health insurance and medical checks
- School registration, deposits, and uniforms
- Scooter rental, driver costs, or a vehicle deposit
- Emergency savings for a flight home or medical care
Many long-term rentals require several months or a full year of rent in advance. That can make the first month far more expensive than the average monthly budget suggests. Keep enough cash for setup costs without using your emergency fund.
Hidden costs Australians often miss
- Air-conditioning can make electricity bills much higher than expected.
- Imported dairy, meat, snacks, cosmetics, and medicine may cost more than in Australia.
- Международный медицинское страхование can rise with age and medical history.
- A cheaper home can create higher driver costs if it is far from school or work.
- Flights to Australia become a regular expense when family, work, or health needs call you home.
- Visa renewals, tax advice, company compliance, and document translations add ongoing costs.
- Mold, pests, pool care, water problems, and small repairs may not be included in rent.
Build your budget around your real routine, not the cheapest lifestyle you could tolerate for two weeks. A move is easier when you can maintain the plan without feeling trapped by every expense.
Is Bali Really Cheaper Than Australia?

Some parts of daily life are clearly cheaper. Local meals, laundry, scooter fuel, domestic help, and many personal services may cost much less. Housing can also be cheaper if you choose a modest property outside the busiest expat zones.
Other costs may surprise you. A modern villa in a popular area can rival rent in an Australian city. International schools may become the largest family expense. Imported products, premium healthcare, and comprehensive insurance can also reduce the gap.
Compare the same lifestyle on both sides. A small local apartment in Bali should not be compared with a large Australian home. In the same way, a private villa with a pool, daily cafés, cleaning help, and a driver is not a basic budget lifestyle.
| Стоимость | Bali pattern | What to check |
| Rent | Can be lower outside top expat zones; premium villas can be high | Lease term, upfront payment, and location |
| Restaurant meals | Local meals are often lower | Imported ingredients and dining area |
| Groceries | Local goods can be lower; imported goods can be high | Your diet and imported items |
| Транспорт | Scooters and drivers may cost less than owning a car | Safety, licensing, and traffic |
| Здравоохранение | Routine private care may cost less | Insurance and evacuation cover |
| School | International schools can be costly | Tuition plus all extra fees |
| Domestic help | Often lower than in Australia | Fair pay and clear work terms |
| Flights home | A new recurring expense | Frequency and emergency travel |
The best way to test your budget
- Track your current Australian spending for two or three months.
- Remove costs that will truly end after the move.
- Add Bali rent, insurance, visas, transport, flights home, and school fees.
- Add a buffer for price changes and unexpected travel.
- Live on the planned budget during a trial stay before signing a long lease.
Australian Tax, Indonesian Tax, and the 183-Day Rule

Tax is one of the most important parts of the move, and it is also one of the easiest to oversimplify. Your visa does not decide your tax residency. Your passport does not decide it either. Each country applies its own rules to your facts.
Leaving Australia does not automatically end Australian tax residency
The Australian Taxation Office looks at more than your flight date. It may consider where you live, whether you keep a home in Australia, where your partner and children live, your employment, your assets, your intention, and the strength of your ties to each country.
You may remain an Australian tax resident after moving, or you may become a foreign resident for Australian tax purposes. The result affects Australian-source income, investments, capital gains, and your tax return. If you keep an Australian home, rental income remains relevant. A change in tax residency may also affect capital gains tax and the main-residence exemption. Get personal advice before you rent or sell Australian property.
Indonesia also has an 183-day test
Under current Indonesian rules, you can become an Indonesian tax resident, or domestic tax subject, if you live in Indonesia, spend more than 183 days there in 12 months, or are present in a tax year and show an intent to reside. The days do not need to be continuous. Some residents may need an NPWP tax number and annual filing. Tax treatment of Indonesian income, foreign-source income, and worldwide income depends on your facts and any available relief.
Intent can be shown by an ITAS or VITAS lasting more than 183 days, a long work contract, a long lease, or moving family to Indonesia. Counting days alone is not enough.
You may have links to both tax systems
A person can meet domestic rules in both countries. The formal Australia-Indonesia Double Tax Agreement may help decide treaty residence and taxing rights. It may also reduce double taxation through methods such as foreign tax credits. It does not make all foreign income tax-free.
The treaty does not remove filing duties by itself. Salary, business income, dividends, rent, capital gains, super, and company structures may each be treated differently.
Remote work can create extra questions
- Where is the work physically performed?
- Which company employs or pays you?
- Are you an employee, contractor, director, or business owner?
- Does the employer create payroll or business obligations in Indonesia?
- Are you managing an Australian company from Bali?
- Do you have Indonesian clients or receive Indonesian-source income?
Speak with an adviser who understands both Australia and Indonesia before the move, not after the first tax deadline. Bring details about your expected days in each country, home ownership, family location, business roles, income sources, and investments.
What Happens to Medicare When You Move to Bali?

Medicare does not pay for medical treatment you receive in Indonesia. Australia does not have a reciprocal health care agreement with Indonesia. You need a separate plan for routine care, hospital treatment, and a serious emergency.
Many private clinics in Bali can handle normal appointments, tests, dental care, and minor emergencies. More complex treatment may require Jakarta, Singapore, or Australia. That is why medical evacuation cover matters, even when local consultation fees seem affordable.
Does moving overseas cancel Medicare?
The answer depends on your legal status and time overseas. An Australian citizen who returns after more than five years abroad may need to re-enroll and prove they live in Australia again. An Australian permanent resident normally stays enrolled for 12 months after first leaving. After more than 12 months overseas, they may no longer stay enrolled.
Do not treat an active Medicare card as overseas health cover. The card does not pay Indonesian medical bills.
What to check in private health insurance
- Inpatient and outpatient limits
- Emergency medical evacuation
- Treatment in Singapore or Australia
- Pre-existing condition exclusions
- Waiting periods
- Motorcycle and adventure activity exclusions
- Cancer, heart, maternity, dental, and mental health limits
- Direct billing and hospital networks
- The insurer’s process for approval before treatment
Read the policy wording, not only the sales page. A low premium can hide a small annual limit, a high excess, or no cover for the activity most likely to cause an injury.
What Happens to Your Australian Super?
Moving to Bali does not normally let an Australian citizen withdraw super early. You usually need to reach your preservation age and meet a condition of release, or turn 65.
The Departing Australia Superannuation Payment is mainly for eligible former temporary residents who worked in Australia and then left. It is not a general withdrawal option for Australian citizens moving overseas.
Review your super before leaving
- Check fees and long-term investment settings.
- Review insurance held inside the fund.
- Update beneficiaries where needed.
- Confirm how the fund will contact you overseas.
- Ask for licensed financial advice before making major changes.
Best Areas to Live in Bali for Australians
The best area is the one that supports your daily route. A beautiful villa becomes tiring when school, work, the hospital, and groceries are an hour away in traffic. Test the route during busy times before you sign.
| Область | Лучшее для | Main benefit | Основной недостаток |
| Чангу и Берава | Remote workers and social life | Coworking and large community | Traffic, rent, and noise |
| Pererenan | Couples and remote workers | Calmer base near Canggu | Fast development |
| Санур | Families and retirees | Beach path, hospitals, and practical services | Less nightlife |
| Убуд | Culture, wellness, and nature | Green setting and creative community | Humidity and traffic |
| Улувату, Бингин и Пекату | Surfers and coastal living | Beaches and open space | Farther from schools and hospitals |
| Семиньяк | Dining and convenience | Established services | Busy and expensive |
| North & East Bali | Quiet and lower-cost living | More space and slower pace | Farther from major services |
Canggu and Berawa
These areas offer cafés, gyms, coworking spaces, beach clubs, and a large international community. They suit people who want a busy social life and easy access to modern services. The trade-offs are traffic, construction, noise, and some of Bali’s highest rents.
Pererenan
Pererenan is close to Canggu but may feel calmer in some parts. It attracts remote workers, couples, and long-stay residents who want modern cafés without living in the center of Berawa. Development is fast, so inspect the street for building work before renting.
Санур
Sanur often suits families and retirees. The beachfront path, calmer pace, schools, hospitals, and access to Denpasar make daily life practical. It has less nightlife than Canggu or Seminyak, which is a benefit for some people and a drawback for others.
Убуд
Ubud draws people who enjoy culture, art, yoga, wellness, and a greener inland setting. It has strong communities and many international services. Traffic can still be heavy, and the climate may feel wetter and more humid than the coast.
Улувату, Бингин и Пекату
The Bukit area suits surfers and people who want cliffs, beaches, and more open space. New restaurants, gyms, and homes continue to appear. The roads can be slow, and families should check travel time to schools and hospitals.
Семиньяк
Seminyak provides dining, shopping, beach access, and established services. It can work for people who want convenience and a more urban holiday feel. It is busy, built-up, and often expensive.
North and East Bali
Areas such as Lovina, Amed, and parts of Karangasem can offer more space and lower rent. They also place you farther from major hospitals, international schools, the airport, and large professional networks. They suit residents who value quiet and can accept longer travel.
Choose by routine, not reputation
- Drive from the home to school during the morning rush.
- Check the route to a hospital at night.
- Test internet speed inside the property.
- Listen for construction, temples, animals, and nightlife.
- Check flooding, drainage, water pressure, and road access.
- Visit the area in both dry and wet weather when possible.
Moving to Bali With Children
A family move is possible, but it needs more planning than a solo move. School choice affects your location, budget, transport, and the people your children meet each day.
Международные школы
Bali has international schools with several programs and teaching methods. These may include Australian-linked programs, British programs, the International Baccalaureate, and Montessori education. Check each school’s current curriculum and accreditation. Ask about registration fees, building levies, uniforms, meals, buses, activities, learning support, and deposits.
Visit the school before choosing a home. A short distance on a map can become a long drive. Also ask how the school supports new students, language needs, special learning needs, and transfers back to Australia.
Children need the correct stay status
Children normally need a visa or dependent stay permit that matches the family’s position. School enrollment does not replace immigration permission. Start early because birth certificates, marriage records, custody papers, translations, or legalizations may be needed.
Family healthcare
Choose a home with practical access to a clinic and hospital. Keep vaccination records, prescriptions, allergy details, and medical summaries in digital and paper form. Ask your insurer where your child should go for urgent care and whether approval is required first.
Renting or Buying a Home in Bali

Your home will shape your budget, commute, and legal risk. Start with renting a house, then check every contract and ownership claim before making a long commitment.
Rent before you make a long commitment
A short rental gives you room to learn. Spend at least a few weeks in the area, then inspect long-term options in person. Photos may hide traffic noise, nearby building work, poor drainage, damp walls, access problems, or weak internet.
Annual leases can cost less per month, but they often require a large upfront payment. Read the contract carefully. Check who pays for repairs, pool care, internet, electricity, local fees, and damage. Record the condition of the property before moving in.
Can Australians buy property in Bali?
Indonesian land law does not give foreign individuals the same freehold rights as Indonesian citizens. Depending on the property and your status, a legal route may include a leasehold property, a permitted residential right, or a qualifying company structure.
Avoid informal номинальные соглашения where an Indonesian person appears as the owner on your behalf. These structures can leave you with weak control and serious legal risk. Use an independent Indonesian notary or property lawyer who does not work only for the seller or agent.
Property due diligence
- Confirm the legal owner and land certificate.
- Check zoning and permitted use.
- Review building approvals and access rights.
- Confirm the exact lease term and extension method.
- Check taxes, debts, disputes, and restrictions.
- Put every promise in the signed agreement.
- Use an independent legal review before payment.
Can You Work Remotely for an Australian Company From Bali?
You may be able to work remotely from Bali when you hold a visa that allows that activity and your work fits its conditions. The E33G is the main category to review for eligible remote workers employed or assigned by a company outside Indonesia.
Do not assume that online work is invisible or automatically legal. The location of the client, employer, payment, and work matters. Public content, paid promotions, consulting, local clients, and business management may create different immigration or tax issues.
Questions to answer before you log in from Bali
- Does your Australian employer approve overseas remote work?
- Does the visa cover your exact role and income source?
- Will you serve Indonesian clients or receive local payment?
- Could your work create Indonesian payroll or company duties?
- Do your insurance and employment policies cover Indonesia?
- How will tax, super, and employee benefits be handled?
Get written approval from the employer. Protect company data with secure devices, strong account controls, and a reliable internet backup. A café connection is not a business continuity plan.
Healthcare and Insurance in Bali
Bali has private clinics, dental practices, pharmacies, and hospitals that serve international patients. Routine care may be easy to arrange. Serious trauma, complex surgery, cancer treatment, or specialist care may require travel to another city or country.
Keep an emergency card with your insurer, policy number, blood type, allergies, and contact person. Save the closest suitable hospital in your phone. If you ride a scooter, confirm that your license, helmet use, and policy conditions meet the insurer’s rules.
Bring medicines legally
Ask your doctor for a letter that lists each medicine by generic name, dose, and medical purpose. Keep medicine in original packaging. Check Indonesian rules before bringing controlled or restricted drugs, even when you have a prescription in Australia.
What to Arrange Before Leaving Australia
A smooth move starts well before your flight. Use the timeline below to handle visas, tax, insurance, records, housing, and travel in a practical order.
About three months before the move
- Choose the visa route and collect required documents.
- Speak with an Australia-Indonesia tax adviser.
- Compare schools and arrange visits.
- Request health insurance quotes.
- Review your Australian home, lease, mortgage, and mail.
- Check your employment contract and remote work policy.
- Renew passports that are close to expiry.
- Create a realistic moving and emergency budget.
About one month before the move
- Book temporary accommodation instead of a long unseen lease.
- Prepare digital and paper copies of key documents.
- Update banks and arrange cards that work overseas.
- Check how you will access myGov and Australian accounts.
- Collect medical, dental, vaccination, and school records.
- Arrange shipping, storage, or sale of belongings.
- Set up travel and health insurance.
- Plan airport transport and the first week.
In the final week
- Check names, passport numbers, and dates on every visa document.
- Complete the All Indonesia arrival card within the three days before you arrive. It combines immigration, Indonesian customs, health, and quarantine declarations. Save the QR code or confirmation offline. (Official Immigration: All Indonesia)
- Download insurance documents for offline access.
- Keep medicine and important papers in hand luggage.
- Confirm temporary housing and airport pickup.
- Keep enough money available for a sudden change of plan.
Arrange your visa early enough to correct documents
Visa requirements, document preparation and processing times vary by category. Applying before you commit to shipping, a long lease or other major costs gives you more room to resolve missing or incorrect documents.
Visa Indonesia can assist with visa selection, document preparation and the Indonesian visa application process.
Shipping Belongings and Pets From Australia
Shipping can be slower and more complex than expected. Compare air freight, sea freight, excess luggage, storage, and buying replacement items in Bali. Large furniture may not suit the climate or the size of your new home.
Ask a customs broker what documents and residence status are needed before you send household goods. Do not ship first and solve the import rules later. Storage fees can grow while paperwork is corrected.
Moving a pet
Pet entry and movement rules are strict and can change due to animal health controls. Bali also has special concerns linked to rabies and domestic animal movement. Use a licensed pet relocation service and confirm the latest national and local rules before booking a flight or starting vaccinations.
Your First 30 Days in Bali
Use your first month to learn how daily life works before making large commitments. Focus on housing, transport, banking, local documents, healthcare, and a routine you can maintain.
- Stay in temporary housing while you learn the area.
- Set up a local SIM or eSIM and a second internet option. Compare a local bank account with international money transfer services. Check access rules, fees, and exchange rates.
- Use legal transport. Before driving, check the license rules for your vehicle and whether you need an international driving permit. Do not rush into a scooter purchase.
- Visit homes in person and test water, internet, noise, and access.
- Confirm your visa expiry and extension process.
- Meet a qualified tax adviser if your stay may become long term. Ask whether you need an NPWP.
- Register local residence documents when required. ITAS holders may need an SKTT residence certificate through the local civil registry.
- Learn basic Indonesian phrases and local neighborhood customs.
- Save emergency contacts and the route to a suitable hospital.
- Build a weekly routine that feels like normal life, not a holiday.
The first month should reduce uncertainty. Avoid making several large commitments at once. It is easier to change an area, school, or routine before you have paid a year of rent and shipped your whole home.
The Honest Pros and Cons of Moving to Bali
Bali can offer a lower-cost, outdoor lifestyle, but it also brings legal, traffic, healthcare, and distance-related trade-offs. Weigh both sides against your real needs.
Possible benefits
- Bali is a relatively short flight from several Australian cities.
- Local food, services, and transport can cost less.
- Warm weather supports an outdoor lifestyle.
- The island has large international and creative communities.
- You can choose from beach, town, rice-field, or mountain settings.
- Families may gain more time together when work allows flexibility.
Possible drawbacks
- Visa, work, tax, and company rules require careful planning.
- Traffic can take a large part of the day.
- Popular areas have rising rents, noise, and construction.
- Public transport is limited.
- Serious healthcare may require travel.
- Humidity, mold, insects, flooding, and waste can affect daily comfort.
- Distance from family can feel larger during illness or emergencies.
- A holiday lifestyle can become expensive when it turns into a full year.
Bali works best when you choose it for the full reality, not only for beach photos. The island can offer a rich and flexible life, but it still requires rules, routines, patience, and money.
10 mistakes to avoid when moving to Bali
Planning the legal, financial and practical details early can help you avoid costly problems after your move.
-
1. Using a tourist visa for work
Choose a visa for your actual activity. Do not rely on the idea that remote or casual work does not count.
-
2. Ignoring tax until the end of the year
Residency and cross-border income should be reviewed before you move.
-
3. Assuming Medicare covers Indonesia
Arrange private cover and emergency evacuation protection.
-
4. Expecting to withdraw super
Moving abroad is not a normal condition for early release.
-
5. Paying a year of rent before testing the area
Traffic, noise, flooding and daily routes are hard to judge online.
-
6. Buying property without independent advice
The agent, seller, nominee and buyer do not have the same interests.
-
7. Budgeting from old social media videos
Use current rent, school, insurance and visa costs.
-
8. Choosing a home before a school
For families, the school route often decides whether daily life feels manageable.
-
9. Treating Bali as a permanent holiday
Build a normal routine with work hours, rest, exercise, bills and local responsibilities.
-
10. Forgetting an exit plan
Keep funds and documents ready in case work, health, family or visa rules change.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
These quick answers cover the questions Australians often ask before moving. Use them as a starting point, then check the rules that apply to your own situation.
Can an Australian live permanently in Bali?
An Australian can live in Bali for long periods when they qualify for and maintain the correct Indonesian stay status. Permanent residence is a separate legal category and is not automatic after several tourist visits.
How much money should I save before moving?
Your emergency fund should sit on top of setup costs. Many people need several months of living expenses plus rent in advance, visa costs, insurance, flights, and enough money to return to Australia quickly.
Can I work for an Australian company from Bali?
Possibly, when your visa allows the activity and your employment fits its conditions. Review the E33G remote worker route and get tax advice for both countries.
Do I still pay Australian tax while living in Bali?
You may. Australian tax depends on your residency status and income. Moving overseas does not automatically end Australian tax residency.
Will I lose Medicare?
Medicare does not cover treatment in Indonesia. Enrollment and re-enrollment rules depend on your citizenship or residency status and the time you live overseas.
Can I access my super after moving overseas?
Australian citizens cannot normally withdraw super only because they moved. Standard release rules still apply.
Can Australians buy a villa in Bali?
Foreign property rights are limited and structured differently from Australian freehold ownership. Use independent legal advice and avoid informal nominee deals.
What is the best visa for an Australian family?
It depends on the main visa holder’s work, investment, retirement, or family status. Spouses and children may use family or dependent KITAS categories.
Where do Australian families often live?
Sanur, parts of Canggu and Berawa, Ubud, and the Bukit are common choices. The best area depends on the school, hospital access, budget, and daily travel.
Is moving to Bali cheaper than staying in Australia?
It can be, especially with modest housing and local spending. Premium villas, private schools, imported goods, insurance, and frequent flights can make the difference much smaller.
Final Checklist
Before you book a one-way flight or sign a long lease, confirm the essentials below. A clear plan will make the move safer and easier to adjust.

Moving to Bali from Australia can be a practical and rewarding choice when the legal, financial, and daily details fit together. Start with a trial stay.
