Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) is a dedicated, non-governmental, non-profit organization working tirelessly to improve the lives of animals across Indonesia. Founded in February 2008 by Femke den Haas, Karin Franken, and Natalie Stewart, JAAN operates exclusively on donations from individuals and does not receive any financial support from the government. With a mission to alleviate the suffering of domestic and wild animals, JAAN runs numerous programs and campaigns focused on rescue, rehabilitation, and education.

Domestic Programs and Campaigns

JAAN’s Domestic Welfare division addresses the needs of pets, strays, and abandoned animals. Key initiatives include:

• Dog and Cat Adoption: JAAN works to find loving homes for dogs and cats rescued from abusive situations or the streets.
• Dog Meat Free Indonesia: This campaign aims to end the dog meat trade, which causes immense suffering to thousands of dogs annually.
• Cat Sterilization Drives: JAAN organizes regular sterilization drives to control the stray cat population and prevent unwanted litter.
• Emergency Rescues: The organization responds to urgent cases involving abused or neglected animals, providing medical care and rehabilitation.

Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation

JAAN’s Wildlife Rescue division is involved in numerous projects to protect and rehabilitate Indonesia’s diverse wildlife. Significant efforts include:

• Save Dennis Save The Rainforest: A campaign to protect orangutans and their habitats from deforestation and illegal trade.
• Primates Are Not Pets: This initiative educates the public about the consequences of keeping primates as pets and works towards ending this practice.
• Raptor Rescue and Rehabilitation: JAAN rescues and rehabilitates birds of prey, ensuring they can return to the wild.
• Topen Monyet Rehabilitation: Focused on rehabilitating former performing monkeys and releasing them back into their natural habitats.

The Dolphin Project

One of JAAN’s most prominent efforts is the Dolphin Project, which aims to rescue, rehabilitate, and release captive dolphins. The project gained significant attention when JAAN, in collaboration with the Dolphin Project, successfully rescued four dolphins from the Melka Hotel in Bali. These dolphins, named Rocky, Rambo, Johnny, and Dewa, were moved to a sea pen and the world’s first permanent dolphin sanctuary. The sanctuary provides a haven for dolphins that cannot be released back into the wild due to health issues developed in captivity.

Educational Outreach

Education is a crucial component of JAAN’s mission. The organization conducts school and company visits, providing educational materials and workshops to raise awareness about animal welfare. Programs like “Kesejahteraan Hewan Cermin Jakarta Maju” aim to foster a compassionate attitude towards animals among the younger generation, ensuring a better future for Indonesia’s animals.
